Gearbox Q&A

Common gearbox questions

Why is my automatic gearbox jerking?

Jerking can be caused by low or contaminated transmission fluid, worn solenoids, valve-body problems, incorrect adaptations or internal gearbox wear. A diagnostic assessment is recommended before replacing parts.

Why does my vehicle delay before selecting Drive or Reverse?

Delayed engagement may indicate low fluid pressure, worn internal seals, valve-body faults, mechatronic problems or internal transmission wear. Avoid continuing to drive if the delay becomes severe.

What causes an automatic gearbox to slip?

Gear slipping can result from worn clutch packs, incorrect fluid levels, pressure loss, solenoid faults or internal damage. Continued driving may cause additional damage.

What should I do when the transmission warning light appears?

Drive carefully, avoid heavy acceleration and arrange a diagnostic assessment as soon as possible. If the vehicle loses drive, becomes stuck in gear or makes severe noises, stop driving and arrange recovery.

Can Gearbox Kings diagnose my vehicle before repairing it?

Yes. We offer electronic fault diagnosis, pressure and function testing, mechatronic assessment, coding and adaptation checks.

Do you repair mechatronic units?

Yes. We repair and assess mechatronic systems, valve bodies, solenoids, control modules, wiring harnesses, seals and related components.

What is a service-exchange gearbox?

A service-exchange gearbox is a prepared replacement unit supplied in exchange for the existing gearbox. It can reduce turnaround time compared with rebuilding the vehicle's original gearbox.

How do I confirm which gearbox fits my vehicle?

Send us the vehicle make, model, year, VIN and current gearbox details through WhatsApp. Compatibility must be confirmed before ordering or installation.

Is professional installation available?

Yes. Professional installation, testing, coding and adaptations are available. Ask whether installation is included when requesting your written quotation.

What warranty is offered?

Qualifying work and exchange units may carry a six-month or 20,000 km warranty, whichever occurs first. Coverage remains subject to the written quotation, invoice and warranty conditions.

Are the advertised prices inclusive of VAT?

No. All Gearbox Kings promotional prices are marked VAT EXCLUDED.

What information should I send for a quotation?

Please send:
Vehicle make and model, model year, VIN, current mileage, gearbox code if known, warning lights or fault codes, description of the symptoms, and photographs or diagnostic report if available.

Can I continue driving with a gearbox problem?

That depends on the fault. Continuing to drive while the gearbox is slipping, overheating, losing drive or making severe noises may increase the damage. Contact Gearbox Kings for guidance or arrange recovery if the vehicle feels unsafe.

How do I contact Gearbox Kings?

WhatsApp or call 068 777 3520, or email info@gearboxkings.co.za. The workshop is at 817 Woodmead Dr, Kyalami, Midrand.
